General Information:

The Grundfos circulator pumps, Series UP, are specifically designed for heating systems and for circulation of hot domestic water as well as for circulation of liquid in cooling and air-conditioning systems. The UP series pumps are of the canned rotor type, i.e. pump & motor form an integral unit without a shaft seal, and with only 2 gaskets for sealing. The bearings are lubricated by the pumped liquid.

This type of circulator pump installed in a domestic hot water system for the purpose of maintaining hot water at all outlets on a hot water circulating loop requires a horizontal mounted, inline brass swing check valve in the circulating loop between the circulating pump outlet and the water heater to satisfy the plumbing code and to prevent the cold water supplying the water heater from backflowing into the heated water loop.

For maximum energy efficiency, most codes also will require a temperature sensing switch installed on the circulating loop between the pump outlet and the check valve. This switch will shut the circulator pump off when the required temperature is reached and will turn the pump back on when the hot water in the circulation loop has cooled to the selected turn-on temperature. Both of these items are inexpensive and easy to install when the pump is being installed.

The brass check valve in assorted sizes and the temperature controller are both available as an option above to be shipped with this pump for an ideal, energy efficient installation.
